The counselor will explain the rationale for each assessment technique so that you understand what it is for and the purpose of the assessment tools. During this process, the counselor with your participation will gather relevant history regarding your life. It will be important to discuss alcohol or any substance you have used in the past or are currently using at the time of the interview. The information collected during the assessment will be used to discover an appropriate diagnosis and help you in designing an individualized treatment plan. This is a very integrated approach that will involve many different clinical pieces of information about you and your participation in this process will set the tone for moving forward in the intensive outpatient program. Many individuals discover so much insight about themselves during the assessment process and often realize things about themselves they have never verbalized to another person. Strict confidentiality is adhered to from the counselor who is performing the assessment process, so you can feel confident everything you share will be protected by the counselor and by the law. This begins the process of developing a therapeutic relationship between you and the counselor.

Treatment Plan

Once the assessment process is complete, the Counselor will help you develop a treatment plan which will involve you and the counselor identifying problems that you want to work on during the intensive outpatient program. You will establish and agree upon immediate and long-term goals, and you and the counselor will decide on the treatment methods and resources to be used to help you reach your treatment goals.
